Early novels promoted colonialism by making the readers feel that they were superior.
* Heroes of Daniel Dafoe's Robison Crusoe is an adventurer and a slave trader.
* He get shipwrecked on an island.
* He treats the natives of the island as inferior creatures
* He takes natives as slaves ; doesn't even ask for his name and gives him a new name Friday.
* Readers do not find Crusoe's behaviour as unacceptable because they saw colonialism as natural and necessary to civilize barbaric natives.
