- The fluid mosaic model was given by Singer and Nicholson
- According to this model, the plasma membrane is a double layered structure. The plasma membrane is a bilipid layer with two polar ends to the extremes and the non polar ends to the inside
- In addition to the lipids, proteins, fats and some nutrients are also present in the bilayer
- Some proteins like tunnel proteins run throughout the canals while the carrier proteins are surface proteins
- Distribution of proteins and lipids is around 18 % and 76 %
Functions
- Plasma membrane is a selectively permeable membrane,it regulates the influx and outflux of substances by the following mechanisms
Diffusion
Osmosis
Active Transport
- It is involved in protection of cells from external pathogens and high turgor pressures
- It aids the process of translocation of substances
