The process of converting solid form of a substance directly into vapour form is called sublimation.

------------------------------------------------

Activity:

Take some camphor or ammonium chloride.

Crush the compound taken and put it in a china dish

Put an inverted funnel over the china dish

Put a cotton plug on the stem of the funnel

Heat the china dish slowly and observe.

Ammonium chloride on heating changes directly into gaseous state.

NH4Cl ( Solid )----> NH4Cl ( in vapour state )

Observations:

A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state  is observed, this phenomenon is called sublimation.
