Hey there!!
Here is the answer..

The model was proposed by singer and nicolson in 1972. According to this model, the cell membrane is made up of a continuous bilayer of phospholipids and proteins.
The lipids and membrane proteins are dispersed in a mosaic arrangement. these membrane proteins belong to two categories- intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic proteins are found permanently embedded in the lipid bilayer and extrinsic proteins are found either on the outer surface or on the inner surface of the membrane. This is the reason why Singer and Nicolson called these proteins a number of protein icebergs floating in a sea of lipids. These proteins act as enzymes to catalyse reactions ,as pumps for active transport ,as receptor proteins to help in endocytosis( injection of Material by cell) and as transport proteins to help in the movement of water soluble substances.

Hope it helps...

The most widely accepted model for membrane structure is the fluid mosaic model of Singer and Nicholson.

Explanation:

In Fluid Mosaic Model proposes that membranes are lipid bilayers within which proteins float. Where  peripheral proteins are loosely connected to the cytoplasmic membrane consisting 20%-30% of total membrane protein and integral protein containing 70-80% if total membrane protein is amphipathic(i.e. shows both hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature).

Function-

i) This barrier separates inside from outside of cell and permeability barrier presents the passive leakage of cytoplasmic constituents into or out of the cell.

ii) It contains several proteins which transports substances into and out of the cell.

iii) It conserves several energies by separating H+ from 0H- occurring across its surface and helps in synthesis of AMP(Adenosine Mono phosphate)
