It's winter in the Southern Hemisphere when it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The hemisphere tilted toward the sun has longer days and shorter nights.

Explanation:

Seasons are caused as the Earth, tilted on its axis, travels in a loop around the Sun every year. Summer is in the hemisphere tilted towards the Sun, and winter is in the hemisphere tilted away from the Sun. As the Earth travels around the Sun, the hemisphere that is tilted toward or away from the Sun changes.  The hemisphere that is tilted towards the Sun is warmer, because the sunlight travels more directly to the surface of the Earth, so that less is scattered in the atmosphere.
