Photorespiration is the process in which the enzyme RuBisCo acts as oxygenase and combines with oxygen. This is the wasteful pathway which results in the loss of the carbon dioxide which was fixed. Photorespiration results in the light-dependent uptake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide and is associated with the synthesis and metabolism of a small molecule called as glycolate.
