When mud is colonised by plants primary succession can happen. After a long period of time the pond can lose the open surface water due to vegetations. Eventually the pond will disappear after some time. This succession of open surface water is called Hydrosere. Different parts of wetlands responds to different stages of succession. No new species are added and the community remains the same over long periods of time.
