With the increase in the fuel prices, the price of consumer products increases because oil is an essential
component of the industrial and the manufacturing sectors. Also petrol and diesel is used for the
transportation of goods, thus creating an inflationary pressure. There are two statements which based
on petrol and CNG gas, given below.
STATEMENT 1: Every six months, price of petrol increases at the rate of ?4 per litre. Taking price of
petrol in December, 2011 as x and present price of petrol as y.
STATEMENT 2: Due to continuous rise in the petrol price, people are shifting towards CNG whose price
increases at the rate of ?3 per liter in a year.
So, give answer of the question by reading the above statements.
1. According to first statement form linear equation showing amount spend on petrol in December 2012.
A) X=y+8 B) X=8-y C) Y=x+8
2. If x=3, find the value of y?
A) 10 B) 11 C) 12
3. According to second statement, form a linear equation taking price of CNG in December 2011 as a and
December 2012 as b.
A) b=a-3 B) b=a+3 C) a=b-3
4. If a=5, then find the value of b.
A) 8 B) 10 C)

1. linear equation showing amount spend on petrol in December 2012 is Y= X+ 8.
2. If x=3, the value of y will be 11.
3. According to the second statement, taking price of CNG in December 2011 as a and December 2012 as b. the equation so formed will be b = a +3,
4. If a=5, the value of b will be 8
Given:
price of petrol in December 2011 is x
the present price (December 2012) of petrol as y.
Every six months, the price of petrol increases at the rate of Rs 4 per liter.
price of CNG increases at the rate of Rs 3 per liter in a year.
To find:
1. form a linear equation showing amount spend on petrol in December 2012.
2. If x=3, find the value of y
3. According to the second statement, form a linear equation taking price of CNG in December 2011 as a and December 2012 as b.
4. If a=5, then find the value of b.
Solution:
1. linear equation showing amount spend on petrol in December 2012 is
Y= X+ 8.
option C is the correct answer.
- the present price (December 2012) of petrol as y.
- price of petrol in December 2011 is x , x increases by Rs 4 every six months, so after 12 months it will increase by 4*2 = Rs 8. or the price of petrol in terms of x in december 2012 will be X+8.
- hence the equation is Y= X+ 8
2. If x=3, the value of y will be 11.
it can be calculated as under:
⇒Y= X+ 8
⇒Y= 3 + 8
⇒Y= 11
Option (B) 11 is the correct answer.
3. According to the second statement, taking price of CNG in December 2011 as a and December 2012 as b. the equation so formed will be b = a +3, Option B is the correct answer.
- we have, the price of CNG in December 2011 = a
- price of CNG in December 2012 = b
- as the price of CNG increases at the rate of Rs 3 per liter in a year, after ine year the price of CNG in terms of a will be, a+3.
- hence, the equation will be b = a +3
4. If a=5, the value of b will be 8
⇒b = a +3
⇒b = 5 +3
⇒b = 8
Hence, option (A) 8 is the correct answer
