They made Bhishma their army leader because of his enormous power to not be killed by a man!!

The Kauravas made Devavrata Bhisma as the commander-in-chief.

But as Bhisma was defeated at the 10th day of the Kurukshetra War, Duryudhana made Guru Dronacharya the commander-in-chief from the 11th day of the War, he leaded it.

Then, in the 15th day of the War, Guru Dronacharya got killed by Dhristadyumna (the son of King Drupada and brother of Draupadi).

Duryudhana declared Karna as the commander-in-chief of the the Kaurava army from the 16th day of the war.

But unfortunately, Karna got killed in the 17th day.

So in the 18th day, Duryudhana declared King Salya (the king of Madra kingdom, brother of Madri and maternal uncle of Nakul and Shahadev.) as the commander-in-chief.

Salya was killed by Dharmaraj Yudhishthira that day.

No more declaring commander-in-chief from that day as the War ended with Duryudhana's death.

So the list of the commander-in-chiefs of the Kaurava army :-

  1. Bhima :- 1st day to 10th day.
  2. Dronacharya :- 11th day to 15th day.
  3. Karna :- 16th & 17th day.
  4. Salya :- 18th day.

I hope the answer helps you.

Regards.
