Within decade of independence india had to form a state reorganization commission due to following reasons:
- 571 disjointed princely states were present at the time of independence in 1947 that were merged together to form 27 States.
- On the basis of historical and political consideration the division or grouping of states were done at that time rather than on linguistic or cultural divisions. but this was the temporary arrangement
- The differences that existed between various States and on the account of multilingual nature there was the need of the states to be reorganised on the permanent basis.
- The government has appointed the judge of Allahabad SK Dhar in 1948, to head a commission that would divide on state on linguistic basis.
