Within a given principal quantum number, the energy of orbitals increases in the order of s<p<d<f. For higher energy levels, these differences are sufficiently pronounced and straggering of orbital energy may result, e.g., 4s<3d and 6s<5d; 4f<6p. What does straggering mean in this context?​
