Without a single shot being fired or a drop of blood being spilled in the story Old Man At The Bridge, Earnest Hemingway portrays where the true destruction of war lies. How does the story highlight the destruction?
Answers
The destruction of war is very clearly portrayed in the story through the situation of the old man. The man is old and weak and unable to walk any further, but he is being forced to escape. He does not worry about his property, but he worries about the animals that he has to leave behind. The animals will undoubtedly perish during the war, because there will be no one to care for them.
Also, the war caused the old man to leave his town and instead be on the run. Instead of being able to spend his retired life in peace, he is also caught in a war that has nothing to do with him. It has uprooted him and left him in an extremely vulnerable position.
War thus, destroys homes, affects the lives of animals and humans alike and leaves a heartbreaking trail.
