without actually finding f(3), find whether (x-3) is a factor of f(x)=x³+x²-2x+4.

Let us try with synthetic division method
3  | 1  1  -2   4
    | 0  3  12  30
    ----------------
      1  4   10  -26

As the remainder is not equal to zero, hence (x-3) is not a factor of              x³+x²-2x+4
