without carbon life is possible

It really depends on your definition of life. Something would certainly have to replace the role of Carbon as we know it in its current role in our understanding of what life is - Carbon (Element 6) could tap out for say Silicon (Element 14), or possibly even Germanium (Element 32). Many things would be different with a silicon-based “life”, so I don’t know that based on our current definition or understanding that life would be possible without Carbon.
