Step-by-step explanation:

since it has real and equal roots

 {b}^{2}  - 4ac = 0

b= 2(m-1)

a=1

c= m+5

therefore

4(m-1)^2-4(m+5)=0

4(m^2-2m+1)-4(m+5)=0 4m^2-8m+4-4m-20=0

4m^2-12m-16=0

m^2-3m-4=0

m^2-4m+m-4=0

m(m-4)+1(m-4)=0

m= -1,4

so the given equation has real and equal roots when discriminant is zero. Without solving we can use this technique and find value of m
