A settlement is a place where communities of people settle down to live. Settlements involve - cities, town, villages, hamlets, and constructed facilities like roads, parks, enclosures, woods, etc.

The early settlements were influenced by the shape of the surrounding landscape. There are 3 main types of settlement patterns. They are -

1. D
ispersed settlement pattern - It is usually found in the upland areas where buildings are built and spread out.

2. N

3. L
inear settlement pattern - It is found on the steep hillsides and the buildings are usually built in lines.

Well, the settlement is actually a place which previously was inhabitant but then people settle down in the form of community for living . These  may include the cities , the roads, rural areas etc. It may also include the historical properties. Settlement made on the basis of people choices . Some places may have dispersed settlement like happen in the mountains or some rural areas. Sometime it may be places where constructions made close to each other. People mostly choose the places that have the access to some basic necessities like now a day people like to live near the cities.
