.Is empowering women a reality?ForPerhaps no other country but India has a tradition that is rooted in its respect for women. We worship the mother goddess and even the conception of our country stems from perceiving it as a mother to its children. However, free India has not been able to free itself of its narrow-minded view of women and their freedom. On the one hand, we worshipthe mother goddess in an annual display of pomp and splendour but on the other hand, cases of rape, sexual assault and molestations are rising alarmingly. Even an urban, educated, supposedly emancipated woman is stigmatised by society and subjected to sexual, mental or physical torment on a daily basis. More and more women are becoming independent, educated and taking up the roles usually shouldered by sons of the family. They are looking after their families and handling work and if we cannot give them the respect due to them, then there is no point in calling ourselves independent. We must be independent of our social evils first in order to merit a place in the twenty-first century. Women must be given the freedom to live their lives in the manner they prefer.
