Since independence, several efforts have been made to empower women in India. One field where women are still lagging behind men is their representation in the Lok Sabha. In an attempt to increase the percentage of women in political bodies. For several years after independence, representation of women remained extremely low. It was under the 73rd and 74th amendment to the Constitution, 33% of seats in the local self- governing institutions were reserved for women. The representation of women in the Lok Sabha since then is gradually increasing. The representation of women in Lok Sabha has also seen a significant improvement with appointment of 12.15% women MPs in 2014 General elections.in 2019 general Elections, Seventy eight of these women have been elected to the Parliament, a slight increase from the 2014 polls where 62 women parliamentarians were elected.
