Solution :-

In order to understand the solution of this question we must understand a basic formula of Pressure. This is given as,

\;\bf{\mapsto\;\;Pressure\;=\;\dfrac{Force}{Area}}

And from this relationship we get,

\;\bf{\rightarrow\;\;\red{Pressure\;\propto\;\dfrac{1}{Area}}}

\;\bf{\rightarrow\;\;\red{Pressure\;\propto\;Force}}

For Area ::

Hence we get, Pressure is inversely proportional to Area. This means when Area is more, pressure exerted is less. And when area is less, pressure is more.

For Force ::

From the second relationship, we get that Force is directly proportional to Pressure. This means that when Force is more, pressure is more and when Force is less, pressure is less.

For Density ::

We know that, Density is directly proportional to Pressure. This means that when Pressure is more, density will be more. And when Pressure is less, density will be less.

Now let's solve our question ::

(Here we will be taking about big water source like Sea or River since ships can float there only.)

Why do wooden logs float on water ?

We know that surface area of seas and water is very large in comparison to the wooden log. Even it is given that wooden log is small. This means it will have lower mass. And lower mass means lower force exerted. We know that, force is directly proportional to pressure. This means that pressure exerted by the wooden log is less. That's why it floats on water.

If we take this in reference to density, then we see that density of wood is less than sea. And this makes it float on water rather than sinking.

Why do ships float on water ?

Ships have larger surface area of the surface with which they are in contact with water. This means that their lower surface area is much more. And we know that pressure is inversely proportional to Area. This means the pressure exerted by the ship will be less. This is the reason why it floats on water.

If we take this in reference to density, then we know that bottom part of ship is a hollow cavity. This makes it's density lower than that of water. And thus it floats on water.

ANSWER

The substance like wood and big body like ship tendency to float depends  on the overall  density of material. In chemistry one defined density of a material as the mass divided by the volume of the material. Since density of a  wooden piece is less than water therefore it floats over water similarly  the density of a ship is mass of the ship divided by the volume of the ship where  the volume of the ship is so huge that the density becomes less than the density of water. Thus, Wooden logs are very small whereas ships are huge but still both manage to float on water.
