Word Problems:- 1. An elevator descends into a mine shaft at the rate of 6 m/min. If the descent starts from 10 m above the ground level, how long will it take to reach -350 m deep from the ground? 2. The temperature of town A at 4 p.m. was 41°C above zero. The temperature recorded at 10 p.m. was 29°C. If the temperature falls at a constant rate per hour, find the fall in temperature per hour.

Answer:

1) 1 hour

2) 2 hour

Step-by-step explanation:

1) Given :-

Initial height = 10m

Final depth = 350m

Note :- Distance descended in denoted by a '-ve' integer.

Now :-

Distance to be descended :

=> x = (-350) - (10)

=> x = -350 - 10

=> x = -360m

So,

Total distance to be descended by the elevator is -360m.

Thus,

To descend -360m, time taken by elevator is :

=> x = -360/-6

=> x = 60

We know that :-

60 minutes = 1 hour

Therefore answer = 1 hour

2) Ans :-

=> The fall in temperature is 2° per hour.

=> Time taken fall in temperature is 10 - 4 = 6

=> Temperature fall in 6 hours = 41 - 29

= 12

=> Fall in temperature hour = 12/6 = 2 hour Ans.
