In the first graph we see two points 1 and 2. To reach from 1 to 2 or 2 to 1 we consider two paths A and B which can be followed to get the work done.

In the second graph we see the work done by path A .

In the third graph we see the work done by path B. We observe that it is more than A.

Thus, the amount of work done is different while following different paths.

Since work done varies with path it can be defined as a path function.
