see , two equipotential surfaces having different potentials from each other require non zero work for transfer of charge from one to another. So, work done =amount of charge X potential difference between the two surfaces. Two have a better insight of the mathematical formula, u need to give a specific situation , as the exact formula changes according to the situation...
