If you set up the equation to have a single y on the left-hand side, you end up with
y = ax + b (the b may occasionally be 0 in which case it can be omitted). When setting up an equation this way, the gradient and the value for a (the number of x’s) is the same.
So you start with y = (1/2)x. However, y clearly isn’t (1/2)x in the co-ordinate (4, -2). (1/2)x would be positive 2, and -2 is 4 less than that.
So your equation for the line with gradient of 1/2 which passes through (4, -2) is
y = (1/2)x - 4.
