The kidney is not one large filter. Each kidney is made up of about a million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron filters a small amount of blood. The nephron includes a filter, called the glomerulus, and a tubule.

→ As we all know, nephron is the structural and functional unit of kidney.

→ Basically, kidney contains filtration units in a very large amount which is also called as nephron.

A nephron has two parts :-

  • Malpighian body
  • Renal tubule.

Malpighian body :- It comprises of Bowman's capsule which is in a cup shaped structure and glomerulus which is a bunch of fine blood vessels in Bowman's capsule.

→ Glomerulus develops from an afferent arteriole which gives rise to efferent arteriole.

Renal tubule :- It comprises of convoluted tubules which opens into a collecting tubules. Collecting tubules of different nephrons joins to form a collecting duct.

→ Nephron filter the blood to remove nitrogenous metabolic waste.

→ They also absorb some useful substance such as glucose, amino acids, minerals, and major amount of water from the filtrate.
