Given:
The quadratic equation 2x²-5x-3 = 0
To find:
a) The discriminant of the equation
b) Nature of the roots
c) The roots of the equation
Calculation:
We know that discriminant is given by the formula
Δ = b²-4ac
Δ = (-5)² - 4(2)(-3)
Δ = 25 + 24
Δ = 49
The discriminant of the equation is Δ = 49
As Δ>0, the equation will have two real roots
2x²-5x-3 = 0
2x²-6x+x-3 = 0
2x(x-3)+1(x-3) = 0
(2x+1)(x-3) = 0
x=-1/2 , x=3
The roots of the equation are -1/2, 3
