Certainly no one who had studied America’s first crusade for peace and democracy — World War I.

American intervention in that war had prolonged the conflict and made possible a decisive Allied victory — and a vindictive peace.

Those in turn prepared the way for Bolshevism, fascism, and Nazism — and thus World War II.

The second great war (which actually was the second part of a single conflict) set the conditions for decades of cold war (“perpetual war for perpetual peace”), with its waste of billions of dollars and thousands of lives, and its near brushes with nuclear holocaust.

A few wise men — most notably Herbert Hoover, Robert Taft, and those in the “Old Right” — had learned in 1919 that war does not produce good things.

But, alas, Roosevelt and his merry band of world-makers had not learned.

And we are still suffering for their failures.
