World Water Day 2018: Theme and Importance

World Water Day is observed every year on 22nd March all over the world. It focuses attention towards importance of water and how to preserve it. As we know that water is essential for life, without water we can't survive. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. All plants and animals need water to survive. If there was no water there would be no life on earth.

Therefore, it is necessary to understand that natural resources are important for sustaining life on earth. Do you know that approx 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home which affects their health and livelihoods? With the climate change, environment and ecosystem affect and results into the water-crises. Due to floods, drought, water pollution; vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes are degrading.

So, Worl Water Day is celebrated by organising several events, distribute messages through social media, TV, educational events based on the importance of clean water and conservative measures, competitions, etc. We should plant trees, reconnect rivers to flood plains, restore wetlands etc. will help to rebalance the water cycle. Theme = World Water Day is coordinated by UN-Water – the UN’s inter-agency collaboration mechanism for all freshwater related issues – in collaboration with governments and partners. In 2018, the theme for World Water Day is “Nature for Water”.

The UN General Assembly will launch the International Decade for Action: Water for sustainable development (2018-2028) on World Water Day 2018. According to UNGA President Miroslav Lajcak, outlining his priorities for 2018, the event will “contribute to the review of SDG 6” during the 2018 session of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

History = This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In December 1992, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water.

In 1993, the first World Water Day was observed

Importance = The day focuses attention on the importance of universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries. The day also focuses on advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

World Water Day is supported by stakeholders across the globe.

Many organizations promote clean water for people and sustainable aquatic habitats. Events such as theatrical and musical celebrations, educational events, and campaigns to raise money for access to clean and affordable water are held worldwide on or close to 22 March.
