For Swimwear I would recommend against a knit fabric. This being said a fine sock weight synthetic yarn is good. The reasons are simple a fine yarn can be made into a tight fabric. This would help avoid some embarrassment at the pool. The reason for a synthetic is it will dry faster than a cotton or other natural fiber. It will also keep its form better. I have seen many synthetic knit fabrics wear in uneven patterns so it is something to keep in mind.
As for clothing this would depend on the garment and the time of year it is being worn.
For Late sprint to Early Fall a light to medium weight cotton with a loose knit would make a good pullover or jacket. A comfortable shirt is also an option. Cotton is cool and wears relatively well.
For the height of Summer I would stay away from knit clothing.
For late fall and early winter a medium weigh Wool, Rayon, heavy weight Cotton with a tight knit makes a great coat or pullover. If you are going out on the water during the cooler months and into winter a Fisherman’s wool with the Lanolin still in it is the best as it will help to keep you warm in inclement weather. The Fisherman’s wool pullover would best be a loose fitting tight or double knit. This would help keep the cold out.
For decorative clothing such as a scarf a light weight lace knit is wonderful for a night on the town. A shawl made with a fine weight cotton or wool makes a great accessory and will last for years.
I have had good experience with a bamboo rayon for knitting and weaving. It is warm and strong. This rayon is a natural fiber made from bamboo. Hemp makes a good over garment as long as there is a solid lining. Hemp tends to be rough. There are many qualities of hemp on the market. Some do make excellent fibers for clothing. They tend to more expensive.
There are many more options for yarn for each type of clothing. My best advise is to experiment with small pieces of fabric made from different materials and weights of yarn using different techniques and needle sizes till you find the right one for you.
