In my opinion, women, or indeed people, like the formidable Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones are unfortunately very rare. I suspect that most people, confronted by someone who had just tried to steal from them, would likely call the police or perhaps even take out their anger on
that person in the form of physical violence.
There are at least two reasons why I don’t think many people would have reacted as compassionately, as empathetically, or as reasonably as did Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.
