because at the time of release i.e. at t=0 ball will have some velocity which will start reducing steadily due to gravity and reach 0 at peak point.
and then ball will change direction and reach your hand with the same velocity at which it left ( that is why it hurts so velocity can't be zero when it reaches ground).
