Hola user!!☺️

=> Would you be able to check the hardness of water by using a detergent?

⏬ANSWER⏬

• Detergents are ammonium or sulphonate salt of long chain carboxylic acids.

• Unlike soap, they do not react with calcium and magnesium ions present in hard water to form scum.

• They give a good amount of lather irrespective of whether the water is hard or soft.

• This means that detergents can be used in both soft and hard water.

• Therefore, it cannot be used to check wether the water is hard or not.

Hope it helps!!✌️

\large\mathbb{Detergent:}

The sodium salt of a long chain benzene, known as sulphonic acid, which has a cleansing property in water is basically what we call a detergent.

» It can be used for washing substances even when the water is hard.

» These have a strong cleansing action, but some of these detergents are not biodegradable.

A molecule of detergent consists of two parts :

> A long hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain

> A short hydrophilic ionic part

The detergents can lather well even in hard water unlike soaps due to the non formation of insoluble calcium or mageniusm salts present in the hard water. (Here, hard water refers to the water of well, etc.) Further, these are usually used in making shampoos and powders.

Verification : To check the hardness of water by using a detergent.

Since, detergents form lather both in soft as well as hard water, it cannot be used to check the hardness of the water.
