It is possible to cool a bucket of water by putting ice in the water.

The reason behind this is that the water is in direct contact with the ice, which allows direct exchange of heat energy between ice and water.

But when the bucket is kept on ice, there is no direct contact of ice and water.

The bucket remains in contact with the ice, which cools the bucket first and then the water.
