The potentiometer has a very high accuracy as compared to a voltmeter.
A voltmeter has a high resistance (not infinite). When a voltmeter is connected to the terminals of a battery (emf), a small current flows through the internal resistance and voltmeter. So the potential measured is less than the actual emf.
A potentiometer setup uses variable resistors, Rheostat, ammeter etc. The circuit is connected and adjustment is done such that no current flows through the potentiometer. That makes its resistance effectively infinite.
Hence, the calculated value is more accurate and has higher precision.
