Plants are often wounded by various adverse calamities of nature.As a result of this, the living cells get exposed and are subjected to attack by bacteria, fungi and other pathogenic microorganisms as well as dessication.

In case of a superficial wound, the exposed cells dry up and die. Suberin gets deposited in the cells present below the wound resulting in the formation of a protective layer.

Some possess laticifers and produces latex that covers the superficial damaged surface where it coagulates and leads to the formation of a protective cover around the wound.
