My grandmother was born in 1891 so life was completely different then. Horse drawn vehicles were still common.

Her father died when she was very young, so her mother took in washing and sewing to help pay the rent. My grandmother helped with these from a very early age. Later, her mother also took in lodgers, which is how my grandparents met.

I remember her telling me that she received a farthing a week pocket money. and often used to buy broken pat-a-cake biscuits with this. These were a type of shortbread, and obviously you got more if you bought broken ones.

She was highly intelligent but had to leave school and go out to service as soon as she was able. She always regretted this.
