Sympathy (from the Greek words syn "together" and pathos "feeling" which means "fellow-feeling") is the perception, understanding, and reaction to the distress or need of another life form.[1] This empathic concern is driven by a switch in viewpoint, from a personal perspective to the perspective of another group or individual who is in need. David Hume explained that this is the case because "the minds of all men are similar in their feelings and operations" and that "the motion of one communicates itself to the rest" so that as affectations readily pass from one to another, they beget corresponding movements.

With all of the limitations of sympathy, it's far a  beneficial weapon to elevate the ethical and emotional tiers of human beings. Sympathy results in social provider and altruism.

• Usually, human beings are sympathetic in the direction of their pals and kith and kin, and now no longer in the direction of men and women who do now no longer ‘matter’ to them.
• Distance lessens sympathy and nearness will increase it. Out of sight and out of thoughts is the vintage dictum.
