When you pull the finished cloth off of the loom, there’s an instinctive drive to cut into it as little as possible, and not lose much yardage to shaping. Because of this many timeless garments are built on rectangular shapes that loosely fit the body - the Greek chiton, toga, Indian sari, S. American ruana, Central American poncho, and Japanese kimono are all examples.
