1.Transverse waves are always characterized by particle motion being perpendicular to wave motion. A longitudinal wave is a wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction parallel to the direction that the wave moves.
2.Transverse and longitudinal waves are types of mechanical waves.The basic difference between transverse and longitudinal waves is that in transverse waves particles of waves move perpendicular in the direction of wave while in longitudinal waves particles move horizontally in the direction of wave.
