He is commonly known as bapu jee. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on 2nd October 1869 at porbandar in Gujarat. His father's name was Karamchand Gandhi and mother's name was Putlibai.

His father was a deewan at Rajkot and his mother was a religious woman. Mahatma Gandhi was a very obedient child and had many good manners since childhood. He was not a brilliant student in his student life. He was married to Kasturba at a very young age.

He passed the bar at law examination and went to South Africa for his law practice. He returned from South Africa in 1915 after seeing the miserable conditions of indians in South Africa and in his own country. He left law practice and started launching movements against britishers. His two weapons were non violence and truth. He believed in non violence for gaining freedom. He was shot dead on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse. His last words were

"He Ram". His samadhi (graveyard) is at Rajghat in New Delhi. His assassination day is considered as a mourning day meaning shok divas...
