Atha dhvitheeyo(a)dhyaayaha sankhya yogaha

sanjaya uvaacha

tam tathaa krpayaa vishtam ashrupoornaa kulekshanam visheedantam idam vaakyam uvaacha madhusoodanaha

1.Sanjaya said: to him who was overwhelmed with pity and sorrow, whose eyes were filled with tears and agitated, Madusoodana (slayer of the demon Madhu) spoke the following words.

Sri Bhagavaan uvaacha

kutastvaa kashmalam idam vishame samupasthitam anaaryajushtam asvargyam akeertikaram arjuna

2.Sri Bhagavaan said: Arjuna! How has this delusion overtaken you, an aryan, at this odd hour?. It is shunned by noble souls; neither will it bring heaven, nor fame to you.

klaibyam maasma gamah paartha naitattvay-upapadyate kshudram hrdayadaurbalyam tyaktvothishtta parantapa

Yield not to unmanliness, O Paartha!, it does not suit you. Giving the slight mental weakness of heart! Stand up, O Parantapa (scorch of foes)!

arjuna uvaacha

katham bheeshmam aham sankhye dronam cha madhusoodana ishubhih pratiyotsyaami poojaarhaavarisoodana

4.Arjuna Said: How, O Madhusoodana! (killer of demon named Madhu shall I fight Bheeshma and Drona with arrows on the battlefield? the are worthy of deepest reverence, O destroyer of enimies.

(The suggestion may be that Krishna could find some way of helping him to kill the real enemies and not the preceptor, the grandfather, kith and kin, ect.)

guroon ahatvaa hi mahaanubhaavan shreyo bhoktum bhaikshyamapeeha loke hatvaa(a)rthakaamaamstu guroon ihaiva bhunjeeya bhogaan rudhira-pradigdhaan

It is better to live on alms in this world because even after killing them we shall enjoy only bloodstained pleasures in the form of wealth and sense enjoyments.

na chaitadvidmaha kataranno gareeyaha yadvaa jayema yadi vaa no jayeyuhu yaaneva hatvaa na jijeevishaamaha te(a)vasthitaah pramukhe dhaartaraashtraaha

6.We do not know even which is preferable for us, to fight or not to fight; nor do we know whether we shall win or whether they will conquer us. Even the sons of Dhrtarashtra, after killing whom we do not wish to live, stand against us.

kaarpanya doshopahata svabhaavaha

prchchaami tvaam dharma sammodhachetaaha yachchreyah syaan nishchitam broohi tanmae shishyaste(a)ham shaadhi maam tvaam prapannam

7.My inherent ability to arrive at the correct conclusion is affected now by ignorance. Therefore I am asking You with a mind too confused to know dharma, which of the two-defeating or being defeated would lead me to the ultimate welfare. na hi prapashyaami mamaapanudyaad yachchokam uchchoshanam indriyaanaam avaapya bhoomaav-asapatnam rddham raajyam suraanaam api chaadhipatyam

8.Even if I get a kingdom on this earth and that too prosperous and without enemies and even the reign over the Gods in heaven I do na see any way of getting rid of the sorrow which dries up the energy d my vital organs.

evam uktvaa hrsheekesham gudaakeshaha parantapaha na yotsya iti govindam uktvaa tooshneem babhoova ha 9

Sanjaya said: O King, having spoken thus to Hrsheekesha, Gudaakesha the destroyer of foes, said to Govinda, that he will not fight to destroy his dear and near ones, and sat quietly in his chariot.

ashochyaan anvashochas-tvam prajnaa vaadaamsh-cha bhaashase gataasoon agataasoomsh-cha naanushochanti panditaaha 11

Sri Bhagavaan said: Arjuna, you grieve over those who should not be grieved for and yet speak like the learned; wisemen do not sorrow over the dead or the living.

natvevaaham jaatu naasam natvam nemae janaadhipaaha

na chaiva na bhavishyaamaha sarve vayamatah param

12.In fact there was never a time when I did not exist nor you, nor all these kings, nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.
