Tributaries and Basin:

A tributary is a river that joins the bigger river in the course of its flow and then its water is ultimately taken up by that big river but, a basin is the land area through which the rivers flow.

The tributary can be the river that joins the main river and brings up its water and sediments to the main river and the water taken by the main river is finally drained to the ocean or sea. Tributaries along with their main rivers form the river system.

Basin is the land area through which the rivers and their tributaries flow. These land areas are extremely fertile and are the main food-producing areas. For example, the land from which the Ganga river flows is called the Ganga river basin but, there are several small rivers that join Ganga in its course if flow like the Yamuna, Gandak Kosi, etc which are called as the tributaries of the Ganga.
