Write 3 ergonomic factors of a pairs of scissors and explain how they are ergonomics?
Answers
Answer:
An ergonomic scissor is designed so that it puts the least amount of stress on the hand, arm, shoulder and back when the stylist is cutting. Ergonomic scissors can help reduce pain in your hand, elbow, shoulder, and back. They can also help if you are suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, or bursitis.
Answer:
It depends on what kind of scissors you’re talking about, but mostly the ergonomics of scissors lie with the designs of the handles and blades in relation to the tasks required.
For surgical scissors, according to NCBI, on the study of Ergonomic design and evaluation of new surgical scissors, it is said that “the purpose of it is to design a new surgical scissors handle and determine its effectiveness with various usability indices. A new scissors handle was designed that retains the professional grip but has the shapes of the eye rings modified to fit the thumb and ring finger and finger rests for the index and little finger. The newly designed scissors and traditional scissors were compared by electromyography, subjective evaluation and task performance in experiments using cutting and peeling tasks. The newly designed scissors reduced muscle load in both hand during cutting by the closing action, and reduced the muscle load in the left hand during peeling by the opening action through active use of the right hand. In evaluation by surgeons, task performance improved in addition to the decrease in muscle load. The newly designed scissors used in this study demonstrated high usability.”
Besides surgical reasons, scissors are used with high usage by barbers and hairstylists as an essential hand tool. In this way they are used in repetitive motion, and standard scissors are usually straight or have only a slight curve in their design thus the barber or hairstylist is required to continually bend the wrist or contort the body almost all the time in order to effectively use it. The repetitive use of the fingers and forearms of any scissors operation places a great deal of stress on the tendons that run through carpal tunnel. Since traditional scissors rarely allow the hand to be in the neutral position, this bent posture aggravates the already stressed tendons placing the operator at risk for injury. So the ergonomics in relation to this category is to give more comfort to your hands, wrists and arms by designing handles, finger holes and shanks with better angles and positioning.
Many ergonomic scissors these days are designed to have 3 finger holes to allow for superior control as well as a perfectly bent thumb ring for a more comfortable fit. Some ergonomic designs go further with fully rotating swivel thumb to allow the users to straighten the wrist while dropping the shoulder and elbow, like the one in the pic above.
But in my personal opinion, if you just want an ergonomic scissor for basic stuff, one normal double-holed with either a good, stable beveled edged and or convex edged depending on your tasks at hand is good for it (convex edged ones are sharper and need less strength to cut), as long as the thumb rings fit and come with a natural bent to ease the pressure from your wrists, hands and arms, as previously said.
