To find the quantum numbers for an electron in 2p shell

Principal Quantum Number

  • They describe about different orientations like angular momentum of the orbit, size and shape etc.

  • It is represented by n

Azimuthal Quantum Number

  • It is denoted by the letter l

  • It's value is dependant upon the orbital the electron is present in.

  • For s orbital it is 0,p orbital it is 1,d orbital it is 2 and for f orbital it is 3

  • Related with angular momentum of the electron in the orbit

Magnetic Quantum Number

  • Determines the behaviour of an electron is magnetic field

  • m =0,1 and -1

Spin Quantum Number

  • Determines the rotation of an electron around its own axis. If clockwise it 1/2 and if anti clockwise it is -1/2

  • As this is first electron in the orbital,it has clockwise spin.

★The set of quantum numbers for the electron are as follows:

Principal Quantum Number:2

Azimuthal Quantum Number:1

Magnetic Quantum Number:1,0,-1

Spin Quantum Number: 1/2
