Answer:

The difference in temple architecture in Ancient and medieval period

mainly arises from changed political, societal and technological phenomenon.

Ancient Indian temple architecture however is the precursor and mostly the

advanced version of its architecture is witnessed in medieval period though

certain new and improved features can’t be denied.

The first difference visible is the rocks and its architecture. Ancient period

witnessed rock cut temples whereas in medieval period rock was mainly used for

sculpture and structural material such as bricks.

Ancient temples were quite a mix of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples.

However, in medieval time, Hindu temples dominated as Buddhist and Jain

gradually lost their shine.

Medieval Indian temples were often symbolic of the king’s strength whereas

ancient Indian temples were purely religious.

Foreign influence in medieval temples is not much visible whereas ancient

Indian temples, starting from Christian era, heavily borrowed from foreign arts

such as Gandhara and Roman arts.

The construction material of ancient temples were mostly wood (Ashokan

eddicts being exceptions) whereas rock was the primary material in medieval

era.

The temples in both periods carried equal importance. However, their architectural

pattern got evolved with time.
