Industries need power which is being generated at a large number of Hydro-electricity projects spread all over the country. Himachal Pradesh with surplus power has been attracting industrialists from different parts of the country.
Industries like the paper industry need large quantities of water which is available from rivers. Multi-purpose projects built of river have helped in controlling floods besides making water for irrigation available all parts of the year. Storage dams are also being used for fish culture. An unfortunate use to which our rivers are being put is disposal of untreated industrial waste.
The Rivers assume unusual importance where their course is navigable. Transport over the rivers through boats and steamers are economical since there is no expenditure involved on track maintenance. River transport was very popular when there were no railways and motor vehicles
