THE SKYLARK

THE EARTH WAS GREEN, THE SKY WAS BLUE.

I SAW AND HEARD ONE SUNNY MORN,

A SKYLARK HANG BETWEEN THE TWO,

A SINGING SPECK ABOVE THE CORN.,

A STAGE BELOW IN GAY ACCORD,

WHITE BUTTERFLIES DANCED ON THE WING,

AND STILL THE SINGING SKYLARK SOARED,

AND SILENT SANK AND SOARED TO SING.

THE CORNFIELD STRECHED A TENDER GREEN

TO RIGHT AND LEFT BESIDE MY WALKS.,

AND AS I PAUSED TO HEAR HIS SONG.,

WHILE SWIFT THE SUNNY MOMENTS SLID,

PERHAPS HIS MATE SAT LISTENING LONG, AND LISTENED LONGER THAN I DID.

POET'S NAME--CHRISTINA ROOSETI

SUMMARY OF THIS POEM

IN THIS POEM, POET DESCRIBE A BEAUTIFUL SCENE OF A SINGING SKYLARK.

THE POET TELLS US THAT ON A SUNNY MORN-- ING SHE SAW A SKYLARK FLYING AND SINGING. THE SKYLARK WAD FLYING BETWEEN THE GREEN EARTH AND THE BLUE SKY. IT LOOKED LIKE A SMALL DOT ABOVE THE GREEN CORNFIELD. THE POET COMPARES THE CORNFIELD TO A VAST STAGE SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN SET FOR THE SKYLARK. WHITE BUTTERFLIES DANCED JOYOUSLY AROUND THE WINGS, IN PERFECT COORDINATION. THE SKYLARK SANG WHILE IT SOARED UP IN THE SOOTHING GREEN CORNFIELD THAT STRECHED ON HER EITHER SIDES. SHE THOUGHT THAT SKYLARK'S NEST MUST BE HIDDEN AMONG THE COUNTLESS GREEN STALKS OF CORN IN THE FIELD. THE POET SAYS THAT AS SHE PAUSED TO LISTEN TO THE SKYLARK'S SONG, THE DAY TURNED INTO EVENING AND PERHAPS THE SKYLARK'S FREIND TOO WAS LISTENING TO ITS SONG

SHE SAYS THAT PERHAPS THE SKYLARK'S FRIEND LISTENED LONGER TO THE SONG THAN THE POET COULD.
