Hello there!

Firstly, i shall be taking an opportunity to write an answer to it! As i think i have a basic understanding about the prevailing MAN-ANIMAL conflict in contemporary times.

Let me elaborate about man-animal conflict as its roots are deeply entrenched.

Man has evolved from cave dwelling to today’s appartment dwelling. Things have witnessed change at gargantuan level! With coming in to settlements, man cleared forests so as to make it more habitable.

Cleared forests provided a clear view to swathes of land so that man can sense threat easily and immediately. Now as man’s survivability increased its population naturally had to rise, that came at a cost of EXPANSE.

As man expanded he cleared more forests however, he forgot that forests were a dwelling for animals as well. Now when animals were rather forced to move in hinterlands of forests , the hinterlands had to saturate at a point, that my friend, was a point when animals start moving out of forests.

Let me explain with an example, Tigers in india have been a victim of changing ecosystem between humans and environment, tigers require an area of 60–100 sqkms (male) and 20 sqkms (female), on contray the area reduces as man Expands and as a result of which more tigers move out or else they would have to compete with peers and worst even die in a fight. It is thus always is the case that tigers move out of the forests in search of new terrotories.

The case of Sanjay gandhi national park in maharashtra, can be corelated where leopards are seen straying in cities at mid-night. There are even incidents when leopards have made children in the periphery their meals, though thier main prey still remains stray dogs. Having said that thier easy availability of food make them coming out of forests more often.

The problem of such man-animal conflict would turn in to a norm as we expand at the cost of these animals who aren’t aware of what Humans are up to!

What should be done? Well, as it seems we can take steps as of now, for example,

In case of peripheral areas around Sanjay gandhi national park, care must be taken about children that do not stay out late nights, nor does should they be allowed to sleep outdoors.

Man must try to live in harmony for instance GIR NATIONAL PARK is the best example where a harmony between man and asiatic lion is something that is considered a pride. Even if lions hunt their cattle the national parks’ authorities cooperate with the community by compensating. Thus breaking the possibility of any revenge seeking tendencies, although India is a place where animals form part of our cultural aspect, naturally we have a tendency to sustain ourselves in harmony with them since ages, GIR region of gujarat is one such example!

Already efforts of government are underway for instance resettlement from forests to outer peripheries, Sariska national park being one such example! That would altogether provide better livelihood opportunities to the forest dwellers, nonetheless it is easier said than done!

There cannot be only 3 options to it. Society as in we all, must now learn about our ecosystem. It would be too late to react when we would understand its importance. Environmentalists are vocal on such issues, it is time we pay a heed to their concerns, that are altogether ours’ as well.

The opinion is personal, as a point of view of an amateur BUT an environment loving person.
