Answer:

Students are destined to find information for their academic assignments, which is a big part in a student’s life. Hence students need to obtain reliable information that they can utilize for their assignments in order to excel in their studies. Libraries and the internet are major sources of information that students commonly use, for those purposes. A library is a place where there are numerous different kinds of books, educational magazines, newspapers and so on for other people to borrow and read to gain information. Unlike a library, the internet is a computer network where students can attain any kind of information simply by opening the network. As sources of information for students, libraries and the internet have many similar but different aspects such as time, reliability, and accessibility.

As a mechanism for obtaining information, the library requires more time and energy to attain information compared to the internet since it stores hundreds, sometimes thousands, of books. Because there are so many books to go through, students often need a lot of patience in order to find and obtain the book that contains the information that they need.

Of course books in libraries are divided into different categories and sections. These divisions are often helpful for students to find books that they are looking for. However at most times, learning and knowing how to utilize these different sections are difficult tasks for students. Thus they are forced to get help from the librarians, who are often busy organizing the library. Furthermore even though students do know how to use the book catalogue or divisions, these book catalogues are time consuming. On the other hand, the internet requires less time and effort to obtain the information that the student is looking for – the student can simply connect to the internet and open up a search engine. On top of that students are

able to easily distinguish whether it is the information that they need by simply clicking and scrolling down each website rather than going through thick books. Therefore students can attain information very quickly.

Another vital difference between libraries and the internet is their reliability. Reliability is an important aspect for students in completing their

assignments since the academic works that they yield should be original and simultaneously accurately correct. Books found in the library are very reliable because libraries often carefully select the materials that they provide. In other words before librarians actually display books in the library, they study and research to carefully select the most reliable reading items. Moreover there are not only books written by well known authors, who conducted extensive research in that particular area but also there are numerous journals and research papers available in the library that are written by experts of that area. Thus the majority of the books in libraries are very reliable. Conversely, the internet has a lower level of reliability compared to libraries since it is easy for anyone to make a website and post what he or she thinks on a particular subject; people can simply upload any kind information they want on the internet. It would be the students’job to distinguish the website’s reliability.

Libraries and the internet not only differ in their reliability but also in their accessibility. Libraries are more limited simply due to their restrictions in the days that they open. The majority of libraries are closed at nights and on public holidays. Furthermore it is impossible for libraries to store every single book in the world; it has a limited collection of books. Hence students are sometimes unable to attain the book they need. Also some books in the library are outdated – due to the long process of publishing books the information that the book contained can easily become inaccurate by the time the book is published. On the other hand, the internet is more accessible. Students are able to have access to the internet 24 hours a day wherever they are as long as they have connection to the internet. Therefore there is no restriction of when they should search for information. Unlike libraries, students have access to everything available that can be found on the internet. Most importantly, the information that they obtain in the internet is more updated and recent compared to the books in the library.

Overall libraries and the internet both provide tremendous information for students to explore. Despite their similarities, they are different in

aspects such as time, reliability and accessibility. Students should carefully note the advantages and disadvantages of both and utilize the appropriate

mechanism to successfully accomplish their academic works.
