Answer:

Following steps can prove beneficial:

Number of exams should be reduced to 1 or 2 per year so that students would be able to learn at their own pace without any stress. Open book exams should be encouraged.

Rote learning should be discouraged at all levels. Students should be encouraged to go beyond the prescribed syllabus, read books on various topics and explore the subjects along with classes in school. From class 7–8 onwards, teachers should motivate students to make their own notes with minimal help. This would allow them to devolop critical thinking. They must understand that just memorising everything without understanding won't do.

Examination papers should focus on theoretical aspects of a subject as well as simple applications that helps them to grasp the concepts being utilized in real life applications.

Audio-visual methods may be implimented along with conventional blackboard teaching to help the young learners visualize the intricacies of the subject and make the subject matter interesting. This should be done specially for science subjects where a lot of abstract concepts are involved.

Compulsory library and computer classes must be conducted for junior students to provide them with reading and computing skills. As a healthy body is a prerequisite of healthy mind, each student must be enrolled in at least one physical activity such as swimming, yoga etc. A mini laboratory(for junior students)can be designed to perform simple experiments that would allow students to observe the things they 've studied in their science textbooks. For arts subjects, films and documentaries related to subjects can be shown. This way study would be joyful and they'd be able to retain the subject matter more effectively.

Schools should arrange for debates and public speaking time to time. These would help students to obtain confidence to present their viewpoint. Excursions can also be arranged.

Project/group study based learnings should be encouraged. This will enable to devolop coordination skills amongst young minds. They can be given a large number of simple but interesting project topics to choose from. They must be tought collect data and information, analysing them and making meaningful conclusions and attaching references/bibliography acknowledging all sources of information used in the project work. Plagiarism must not be encouraged or allowed. Students must learn that it is a wrong practice.

To prevent cheating in exams, questions in paper can be shuffled i.e. questions would be same for everyone but the orders would be randomly shuffled for each student. This would ensure fair play(same paper for all)but at the same time would act ad effective deterrent.

These are sufficient measures in my opinion, that should be implemented, to reform our school education system.

Suggestions are welcome.
