Autobiography of Coal
Millions of years ago, the sea bottom arose, and I, a plant that grew in the mud of the ocean, emerged from the sea. Centuries afterward, many more plants grew, but every time the sea bottom went down below the level of the. water, poor "Me" had to be crushed until I was a piece of hard Anthracite coal. After the millions of years had passed during the building of the continent, men discovered my species of coal. As they thought I was valuable for intense heating, they dug me out and sent me to what I learned afterward to be the city of Pittsburg. As Pittsburg was a big coal and iron center, they used my kind of coal a great deal, though I was born In eastern Pennsylvania. There arc two kinds of coal; Anthracite and Bituminous. Some of my brothers and sisters were of the latter, or soft coal. Bituminous coal is sometimes made into coke, and anthracite is the coal used for heating and cooking in New England and the Middle Atlantic etates. Well, I was afterward sent to Boston, Mass., and was burned in a blast furnace. I am now in ashes in au ashcan.
